„Comrades are on the same side, and they’re not looking at each other – they’re looking outward, at the goals they have. So when you think about comradship from the perspective of individuality, what you’re thinking about is how you are joining with others to pursue the political goal that you all have.“

To be a comrade is to be fierce and to take action to upend the status quo…I would be willing to risk social standing, ambition, and acceptance by my peers to do the right thing.

Neoliberalization goes hand in hand with individualization. One’s own life is supposed to be special, incomparable with others, products are tailored to the individual, many people go on vacation where no one else has been, social media put the individual and one’s own self-dramatization in the foreground. This individualization also leads to left-wing politics being partly oriented toward the interests of individuals. Then revolutionary approaches like “safe space” quickly become a tool to make life more beautiful for oneself personally and alone, in distinction from the others. In practice, this may mean that a political action is only about self-gratification/self-pleasure instead of the collective political goal one sets for oneself. The term “allyship” found its way into the (not only)feminist scenes in Germany. An ally is a privileged(ere) person who critically deals with the topic of discrimination and classically supports affected people in their struggles. Even though for years the term has been recognized as central against discrimination, there are more and more voices saying that in such an approach there is no revolutionary struggle against exploitation and oppression.
They suggest that we can only break down oppression as “comrades”. That means attacking oppression and exploitation together and not just leaving it to those who are most affected by it. That means to understand a struggle against capital and exploitation and for a liberated society as one’s own and to risk something for it. Anti-racist struggles should not only have to be led by people who have to face this shit every day. Antisexism also means attacking patriarchy as a cis man.
To be a comrade is to be fierce and to take action to upend the status quo…I would be willing to risk social standing, ambition, and acceptance by my peers to do the right thing.
